There are approximately 3,000 spider species in North America. The spiders in Upstate New York are known to overpopulate an area and quickly infest a home or structure; this often happens with waterfront properties.

Common rodents in this area such as the Norway Rat, Roof Rat and House Mouse are called commensal rodents. They do not serve any beneficial purpose and destroy far more than they actually eat. They contaminate foods and spread disease.

Wasps are generally beneficial to man and the environment. However, they become pests and even a danger when nesting around our homes. By far the most troublesome stinging insects associated with structures are the social wasps - paper wasps and yellow jackets.
Carpenter Bees are often confused with Bumble bees due to their size and shape. However, the two insects are very different. Carpenter bees get their name from boring into wood to make nests for their young. They cause structural damage and can be quite a nuisance.

Carpenter Ants are the most likely species to invade a home in the United States. They are typically large and black, but can vary in size and color. They prefer dead, damp wood to build nests and are capable of causing serious structural damage.
Small ants can be more than a nuisance in a home. They can excavate wood and insulation when nesting and are aggressive when disturbed. Many small ant colonies have multiple queens and can readily relocate a nest if endangered.

Fleas are a threatening species to humans and pets. They cause discomfort from biting, and they can transmit several diseases. They are wingless, usually reddish-brown and can jump up to 7 inches high.

Bed bugs are one of the oldest pests and require a blood meal from humans to molt and females can reproduce rapidly. They are reddish-brown, flat and oval shaped. These pests are extremely difficult to eliminate and require a thorough inspection and extensive treatments.

House Flies are usually less than 7mm in length and their most noticeable characteristic is the presence of three black stripes on the gray coloring of their thorax. Ticks are arachnids, meaning they are closely related to mites and spiders. The three most common ticks in New York State are the deer (black-legged) tick, the American dog tick and the lone star tick. Only deer ticks can carry the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.
